EUDR compliant wood
EUDR compliant wood: everything you need to know
The European Union is tackling global deforestation with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This regulation imposes stricter requirements on the import and trade of wood (products) within the EU.
Are you in the lumber business? Then it is important to understand what the new EUDR regulation means for you and how to comply with it. Stevens Hout has been committed to sustainable and ecologically responsible timber for many years. In our offer you will therefore only find EUDR compliant timber.
What is the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)?
The EUDR is a European regulation aimed at combating deforestation and forest degradation worldwide. To this end, the EU restricts the import and export of products that contribute to deforestation. Timber and timber products harvested after Dec. 30, 2020, from areas undergoing deforestation are no longer welcome on the European market.
The EUDR is the successor to the EUTR or European Union Timber Regulation. That one dealt with illegal logging and its trade. The EUDR goes a step further and tackles deforestation directly.
Important dates in EUDR legislation
The legislation entered into force on June 29, 2023. As of Dec. 30, 2025, it is fully applicable for medium and large companies. For micro and small businesses, there is a deferred implementation until June 30, 2026.
Impact of the EUDR on the timber trade.
The EUDR directly affects anyone who imports, exports or produces timber and related products within the EU. With their timber comes a ‘due diligence’ or due diligence statement. This guarantees that the products do not contribute to deforestation and have been produced legally. The full declaration includes the origin of the timber and detailed information about the supply chain.
EUDR compared to PEFC, FSC and CE
In addition to the EUDR, there are other certifications and labels that ensure the sustainability and legality of wood products:
- PEFC label: the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification is a global label that promotes and certifies sustainable forest management.
- FSC label: The Forest Stewardship Council is an international organization that promotes and certifies responsible forest management.
- CE Marking: a marking that indicates the performance of a product, so you choose the right product for your application.
PEFC and FSC focus on sustainable forest management and CE on product safety. The EUDR, in turn, emphasizes the prevention of deforestation by imposing strict due diligence requirements on companies. Adherence to PEFC or FSC standards can contribute to EUDR compliance, but does not replace legal obligations under the EUDR.
