CE label
What is a CE label?
The CE label is a European conformity mark that indicates that a product complies with European legislation and standards. It relates to health, safety, environmental protection and consumer protection.
What does a CE label guarantee?
The CE label guarantees that a product complies with the essential health and safety requirements set out in the relevant European legislation. By affixing the CE label on a product, the manufacturer or importer certifies that the product has been evaluated and is in compliance with the applicable European directives or regulations applicable to that specific product.
However, it does not guarantee that the product has been independently tested by a third party. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer or importer to ensure that the product meets the legal requirements.
Is a CE label mandatory?
Yes, the CE label is mandatory for many products marketed within the European Economic Area (EEA). It applies to both products produced in the EU and those imported from outside. The obligation to use the CE label applies to manufacturers, importers and distributors who place products on the EU market that fall within the scope of the relevant EU directives or regulations.
How is a CE label verified?
The CE label is usually not checked by government agencies before a product is put on the market. Instead, it is the responsibility of the manufacturer or importer to ensure that their products comply with applicable laws.
They must assess the conformity of their products against applicable EU directives or regulations and compile a technical file with the relevant documentation. EU member state authorities do have the right to randomly inspect and test products to ensure they meet legal requirements.
How do you recognize a CE label?
A CE label is identified by several characteristics:
- Logo: The CE label consists of the letters “CE” in a stylized format. The letters are always in the same design and are located side by side without any other symbols or characters.
- Size and location: The CE label must be clearly visible and legible on the product, packaging or accompanying documentation. The size and location of the CE label vary depending on the type of product, but it must be easily visible to consumers and regulatory bodies.
- Unique identification number: Sometimes the CE label contains a unique identification number. This number indicates that the product has been evaluated and certified by the responsible manufacturer or importer.
