What is ThermoWood Ayous?
Ayous and Wawa are the commercial names for the botanical species ‘Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum‘. Which belongs to the Sterculaceae family and is from tropical Central and West Africa. There are other variants of this species such as Samba from Ivory Coast and Obéché from Nigeria, yet Belgium imports only Ayous from Cameroon and Wawa from Ghana.
By nature, Ayous has durability class 5. Thermal modification upgrades this to class 2, which corresponds to classic tropical woods.

- Soft wood species: ThermoWood Ayous is a relatively soft wood species. This makes it easy to install and fasten. Due to its softness, this type of wood is less suitable for terraces, however.

External characteristics of ThermoWood Ayous
Ayous and Wawa are huge trees. Their crown is sometimes more than 50 meters high. The straight trunk grows up to 25 meters long, but is cylindrical only in rare cases. The diameter varies between 90 to 150 or even 200 cm. The narrow rootlets of the Ayous grow up to 8 meters high. What is also very typical of this wood species are the up to 1 cm wide worm holes.
In Ayous and Wawa, the heartwood and sapwood are pale and indistinguishable. Ayous is slightly more uniformly white with brown or gray barrels and has relatively more closed grain. Wawa, in turn, tends a bit more toward gray and has a more pronounced color variation. Both Ayous and Wawa have straight grain to cross grain. When cut to quarter, it shows light streaks and the grain is moderately coarse to coarse.
After thermal modification, the wood takes on a light brown color, which ages over time with exposure to rain and sun.

Has a pronounced pattern with natural color differences and character. This tropical look appeals to both modern and rural architecture. Thanks to its slightly higher density, Thermo Fraké feels more solid than Thermo Ayous. It also contains less tension. This gives more shape retention in the long run.

A soft soft softwood species thermally modified to durability class 2. It is characterized by its beautiful grain, is almost always knot-free and can be found at Stevens Wood in long lengths. Its softness makes it, like Ayous, easy to work with. The structure of softwood offers a little more robustness. Top in terms of value for money.

Ayous and Wawa are easy to work with. Therefore, the wood has a fairly wide range of applications in interiors (moldings, furniture, instruments…).
