Thermowood
Thermally treated wood
At Stevens & C°, we specialize in ThermoWood®. This is a treatment in which wood is exposed to heat and steam. This naturally and without chemicals makes the material as durable and stable as wood from tropical forests.
What is Thermowood?
ThermoWood® is thermally treated wood: an environmentally friendly alternative to tropical hardwood. With a special heat treatment, European coniferous trees are made insensitive to moisture and fungi. The result is a durable wood that lasts a very long time.

Types of Thermowood
ThermoWood® is as durable as tropical wood but more economical and easier to install. This makes the wood suitable for a variety of outdoor applications.
Terrace Boards
Decking boards must withstand weather and wind. ThermoWood® deck boards are as durable as tropical hardwood, but more economical and produced in a more environmentally friendly way.
Woods
ThermoWood® is made from European softwood namely spruce and pine. In addition we also have non-European woods such as Radiata Pine, Ash, Poplar, Tulipwood and Ayous.
Cladding
Wood siding gives your home a natural, elegant look. ThermoWood® is resistant to moisture, rot and temperature fluctuations due to its thermal treatment.
How is Thermowood made?
ThermoWood® is an ecological wood improvement process. Exposed to proper heat, wood is naturally made more durable and dimensionally stable without the use of chemicals. The ThermoWood process makes European conifers as durable as tropical hardwoods.
Benefits of Thermowood
ThermoWood® is thermally treated against harmful influences, making it more durable and stable than untreated wood. Compared to tropical hardwood, ThermoWood® is more ecologically sound, more affordable and easier to install.

How durable is Thermowood?
ThermoWood® pine and spruce is an environmentally friendly alternative to tropical hardwood. This is because it is made from wood from sustainably managed forests of local origin and from trees that regrow faster. Thus, tropical old-growth forests are spared.
Various labels also demonstrate the durability of ThermoWood®. The European CE label relates to health and environmental protection, among other things. The PEFC label and the FSC label in turn guarantee that ThermoWood® meets the requirements for responsible and sustainable forest management.
ThermoWood® has a insulation capacity which is 23 times higher than untreated wood. It is therefore well suited for passive housing construction. The wood is a chemical-free product, it is completely recycled after use.
Thermowood versus tropical hardwood
What are the differences
Tropical hardwoods are imported from the other side of the world, and you notice the price. For ThermoWood® pine and spruce, we use fast-growing wood species from European, sustainably managed forests. This is not only better in terms of price, but also in terms of carbon footprint.
In addition, ThermoWood® is lighter and therefore easier to install than hardwood.
- More environmentally friendly
- More affordable
- Easier to place
Thermowood: applications
ThermoWood® is ideal for outdoor use: the heating process makes the wood more durable, dimensionally stable and resistant to all weather conditions. The wood is better protected against wood rot, mold or damage by wood-eating insects.
